Student Government: Creating Tomorrow’s Leaders Today

The Student Government Organization or SGO is an anti-violence leadership program. The program is designed to empower youth through engaging them in civic duties not only in their school, but also in the surrounding community. SGO is open to all children who attend Bildersee Intermediate School free of charge.

The Student Government Organization serves to increase Parental Involvement and Community Involvement. Sessions with parents regarding the purpose and benefits of a student government are held annually. Parents are encouraged to participate in many events hosted by students such as Teacher/Staff Appreciation Day, Family Culture Day, Advocacy Day, and Community Service Day.

If you are interested in enrolling your child in CAMBA’s Student Government Organization after school program, please notify the school or contact:

Ms. Stephens in Room B-85-A through email at ShamekaS@camba.org or 917-204-2693.

Community Involvement

The Student Government Organization serves to increase Parental Access to Community Resources.  We are able to provide inter-agency referrals for CAMBA services from Immigration Legal Services to Anti-Eviction Services.

We collaborate with Parent Coordinators, Guidance Counselors and PTA/PA members to host Parent Forums. We discuss such issues as: Immigration, Domestic Violence, and Health Access.  Our presenters have included representatives from State Senator Kevin Parker’s Office, Kings County District Attorneys Office, Catholic Charities, CAMBA, Inc., Families For Freedom, and the New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene.

Open Houses and Fairs are held throughout the school year to provide parents with access to free and inexpensive Community resources such as: After-School Programs, GED and ESL Classes, Computer Classes, Youth Job Training Program, and Legal Services, as well as information on Lead Poisoning, Immunization, Home ownership, Health Insurance, and Voting Rights.

Parent Involvement

The Student Government Organization serves to increase Parental Involvement. Sessions with parents regarding the purpose and benefits of Student Government are held annually.

Parents are encouraged to participate in many events hosted by students such as:

  • Teacher/Staff Appreciation Day: This is an annual event where students and parents can express ‘Thanks!” to the people who educate our children. Our day normally consists of a breakfast or lunch, an awards ceremony and a small gift of gratitude to educators and staff.
  • Family Culture Day: Family Culture Day is a celebration of all our differences. There is entertainment, food, music, and dance representing the many cultures that make up our SGO group.
  • Advocacy Day: Advocacy Day allows parents’ and students’ voices to be heard! We travel to Albany along with children and parents from across the state to visit politicians and lawmakers and let them know what after school programs and programs provided in school through community based organizations mean to students and their parents. As a publicly-funded program, SGO and other programs are under the constant threat of being extinguished. Advocacy Day allows lawmakers to see how the program affects everyday people and their families.
  • Community Service Day: Community Service Day is a chance for parents and students to make a difference in our communities together. This includes cleaning public parks, which are used by us all, painting over graffiti and other projects which are needed in the community.

With the participation of parents, children learn that giving back and contributing to the community is a life long necessity, ensuring that generations to come will benefit from our efforts.

Activities

  • School Lobby Day with the Coalition for After School Funding.    This is a joint venture between the Coalition for After School Funding
and Community Based Organizations which provide after school
services for students in New York State. During After School Lobby Day, students meet with politicians to discuss the need for funding of after school programs and meet with other students from around New York State to discuss the programs in which they are involved.|
  • Youth Action Day with Neighborhood Family Services Coalition and the Coalition for After School Funding. Youth Action Day is a subset of Global Youth Service Day, a day when children around the world take action and do something in their community. This year, our students are teaming up with members of New York Cares to beautify our school.
  • Students can Create Their Own Business. In conjunction with Youth Venture, students can create their own sustainable business or Community Based Organization and be eligible for a grant of up to $1,000.00 for start up expenses. Students have come up with many ideas which hopefully will be awarded a grant. If your child is interested in this program, please contact Ms. Shameka at ShamekaS@camba.org
